Willa pushes for answers so that she can move on in her life. But will the answer help her move forward or confuse her further?

I know that there are unanswered questions in my past. I've sought answers only to have a big stop sign shoved in front of me. It's up to me to stay comfortable behind the sign or push further to prove a point. But, at this point in my life, I'm looking ahead not back.

The question remains does Willa knock the stop sign down or not? Guess you'll have to read the book and find out. I've read all Mary DeMuth's books and she never disappoints.

Story Engineering by Larry Brooks

I was pleasantly surprised to see a writing book up for review. I snagged my copy knowing that it would be part of my home library.

This is not a book to be read in one sitting. One must digest each chapter and enjoy each bite. If you are a highlighter fan, get them ready to use.

If you have read every book under the sun and still have rejections decorating your wall, this is a book to consider. If you are a seasoned writer, this is a book to read. You will catch something that will make your writing a little bit better. One has to wonder how authors have made it without this book. It’s because the authors have written to the 6 core competencies with instinct. They may be seat of the pants writers but they still have them buried deep within. They understand. They get it.

What is the concept of your story? Character? Do you have a hero? You should. Concept and Theme are easily confused. He explains the difference. Story structure. If you do not have that, good luck getting published. A story is set of scenes. Write one scene after another. Larry Brooks explains the your writing voice is like a coat of paint. I love that. It’s not all the uncommon to want to be the next Karen Kingsbury. But, there is only one Karen. And there is only one you.

I recommend this book for both unpublished and published writers alike.

This book is utter amazement. Ann experiences pain but through the hardships, she finds joy. The world stopped as I read her poetic descriptions of pain, joy, and grace. Much grace.

It’s easy to see everyday tasks as mundane, boring, or downright depressing. Ann takes the everyday tasks and finds joy. She has a challenge to write down a thousand blessings. She runs with it.

To find the blessing, one must stop and notice. Notice the bubbles that gather around and through the fingers. Notice the tingling sensation. Notice. Life feels like a big to do list. Overwhelming. As I read Ann’s book, I began to see some of the blessings in my own life. Slept in on a lazy Saturday, hearing my son’s laughter, kissed by the sun, my husband’s smile, and chatted with my best friend. The blessings were right in front of me. I had to open my eyes and see them. It’s easy to focus on the negative. I have to remind myself on a constant basis to see the blessings. It’s one day at a time.

I highly recommend this book.

Soul Print by Mark Batterson

Pastor Mark is amazing! He opened my eyes to the true meaning of being created by God. He delves deep into the story of David. He interweaved the story with current times and how it applies to our lives today.

He challenges us to go through a process of self-discovery. The discovery will dig up joyful experiences and painful experiences. It’s through the pain that God can show us His greatest glory.

It’s easy to think we are but a small pebble in God’s eyes. But that’s not true. We are unable to understand the love that God has for us. It’s the same for parents. Whether we have one child or seven children. Each child is unique. As parents, we cannot imagine life without our child or children.

Mark brings up lifesymbols. Lifesymbols can be anything but they are items that remind us of a specific time or event. It can be photos, letters, or even a special rock. I have many things but very few lifesymbols. Or, I should clarify; my stuff is overwhelmed by lifesymbols. In a previous job, we had some sort of contest and it had to do with coming up with the best idea. I won the contest! I received a black shiny rock and it had best idea on it. I love that rock. It represents a time that I came up with an idea that would change our company for the better. That rock is more important to me than a book that I may have purchased and I love books. Mark has reminded me to look for those lifesymbols and to surround myself with those rather than stuff.

There is so much more to this book. I highly recommend others to pick it up and take your time. Read, digest, and discover your Soul Print.

Jack and Anna attend a church Couple’s Shower. Through some social interactions, Anna ends up in the room with Kristy, a preschool child. Anna is uncomfortable. Something isn’t right. Her and Jack leave the shower but Anna cannot let go of Kristy’s appearance. She believes she is going to die. Jack wants her to leave it alone. The parents will take care of her. Anna ignores Jack pleas.

A knock on the door changes the couple’s lives. Anna is arrested for the murder of young Kristy. Kristy’s family attends the same church and chaos erupts. The church family believes Anna killed her. They really do not know Anna very well. All but one person is willing to help.

This is a spiritual warfare novel. Anna has ‘visions’ and she cannot ignore them. She meets Theo, a hospital employee, who seems to have the same gift. Theo, like Anna, cannot leave it alone. Jack doesn’t trust Theo and wants her to back off. Anna is torn between Jack and Theo but ultimately does what her soul tells her to do.

I do not have the gift of prophesy so this was new territory for me. I think we all get ‘feelings’ like something is not right and usually we are right. Visions are different. It is a biblical concept but one that I’m not real familiar with. I think it would be a bittersweet gift. You have to fully rely on God. Otherwise, you may be lead astray.

If you enjoy murder mystery and spiritual warfare novels, I think you will enjoy this book.

His Other Wife by Deborah Bedford

This is the first book that I’ve read by Deborah Bedford. I am thrilled that I was given the opportunity to read this book. After reading this book, I’ve scanned through other books (in the back of this book) and I have my eye on another one that I plan to read.

Hiliary’s life is turned upside down when her husband leaves her for another woman. Her son, Seth, is set to go to college soon and she will soon be experiencing the empty nest syndrome. Maybe she depended on him too much after the divorce? Seth will protect his Mom no matter what.

Hiliary prides herself that her son can bring home his friends and they confide in her. Seth is senior and will be graduating this year. All is in place for the annual senior campout party. There may be some harmless drinking. It’s not a party sponsored by the school.

Eric, Hiliary’s ex-husband and his new wife, Pam, get wind of this party and thinks that Hiliary is making a huge mistake by allowing Seth to go. But, Hiliary trusts Seth and she’s not worried.

The campout doesn’t go as planned. An accident happens at the campground and now the two families must come together as one.

How can Hiliary possible befriend another woman who stole her husband and her life?

In life, there are many circumstances. We wish that we can change them but in some cases, it’s not going to happen. In Hiliary’s case, Eric was not going to return to her. It was a fact. Hiliary had to learn to change herself since her circumstances did not. It’s only through God’s power that one can truly change and the change will stick like superglue.

Robyn is under attack like never before. She prays on school grounds with others in her youth group. An obnoxious reporter, who is determined to stop the prayers, challenges her. How dare she pray for others when they didn’t ask for it? Her Principal requests that she stops the prayer group, she refuses.

Enter Caleb and Taylor who fights for Robyn’s affection. There is a spiritual battle at play and the demon is not about to give up.

This book kind of reminded me of a play that I watched called, “Interview with the Devil.” The demon is at work and he looks for a way to mess us up. Satan whispers lies into our ears. It’s subtle enough that we believe that it’s our own thoughts not ours. It’s scary. It’s not a joke.

This story plays upon the fact that Satan is alive and well. He will do anything to trip us up. He might hurt loved ones to trick us into thinking that God doesn’t care. I admit I can easily be tripped but if we store God’s word into our heart, the damage can be minimized. I do believe that the stronger our faith and if we continue to shoo the Devil away, he will be tired of us and move on. Unfortunately, he may move onto people that we truly care about.

This is a great story and reminder that we are not alone in this world. There is an unseen battle at play.

I recommend this story to teens and youth pastors. Great book!

Norbert, a sweet elephant wants to fit in but he’s having the worst school day ever! No one wants to sit by him except for Heidi the Hippo. Then the others think Heidi’s his girlfriend. What’s worse than that? He wasn’t picked for a team.

Norbert confides to his mother all of these bad events. Norbert is confident that even his mom would choose the others, because they are better and more skilled than he could ever be. But, he’s wrong.

The author reminds us that we can bless our children through touch and the words we express to our children. The concept is based on the Old Testament blessing.

God has blessed parents with children. It’s only natural that we continue the tradition by blessing our own children.

The story is a great reminder how we often compare ourselves to others. The grass looks greener on the other side. If we hop on over, we’d be stung by bees, the grass would itch, and dirt would become evident.

God didn’t make a mistake. By thinking that He did, it’s actually an insult to Him. He created us and we should thank Him and seek Him in everything that we do. It’s through Him that He will make our paths straight.

unPLANNED by Abby Johnson

Abby Johnson had a plan. The plan was to help women in crisis. Her goal was to help them fight for their right to choose abortion. After all, it’s not really a baby. This DVD is an excellent documentary how God changed her heart. She became the Director of Planned Parenthood in Texas. She made the bold choice with a new determination and walked out. That bold step became a National News Story.

Abby was candid in this DVD. She had to open her heart and I’m sure it was the most difficult yet rewarding thing she has ever done. She admitted to her past mistakes. She grew up in the faith. I could only imagine the heartbrokenness of her parents when they found out that their daughter was an advocate for right-to-life debate.

One day, Abby had the opportunity to be in the room as an abortion was being performed. It was that day that her heart changed.

For some women, it might be inconceivable how one could ever have an abortion. If you hear Abby’s story, you might change your mind. There are events that happen in one’s life. Unless you walk (literally) in their shoes, you cannot judge. You can perceive what you may or may not do in the same situation. The truth is – you do not really know how you would react to an unexpected pregnancy.

This DVD would be a great addition to a church library. I encourage you to view the DVD and share it with others. I believe it can be a healing process for some women who may have lost a baby through abortion.

The Hidden Magic of Walt Disney World by Susan Veness

Our family has been to Disney World a few times. I thought we had seen it all. Susan Veness has proved me wrong.

This book is filled with Disney Secrets and Fascinating Facts. I was a little skeptical about reading this book because of some of the negative reviews. But, I'm so happy that I ignored them and went ahead and picked this book to review.

There are maps of the parks and tips such as in Honey, I shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure: If you stick your hand inside the dog's nose, you might trigger a surprising reaction.

One thing that stands out in the book is that there are words that are in bold type throughout the book. It's a great way to catch your eye while reading. This book does not need to be read in sequence. Skip to your favorite Disney Park and location and see what you learn. You will be quite surprised. For one, I want to ride one of my favorite roller coasters (Thunder Mountain) and see the party.

The major parks are included in this book. If you want to skip around, look at the index and then go directly to that page.

Have you ever wanted to sit down with Max and ask him questions?

Max’s book tackles the letter H – ok, not really. However, he does delve into Hope, Hurt, Help, Him/Her, Home, Have/Have-Nots, and Hereafter.

In this book, Max answers several questions that are in the hearts of many people. He doesn’t shy from hot topics such as homosexuality, infidelity, sexual abuse, etc.

On the subject of homosexuality, he brings up a very good point. One that many people are quick to ignore. Or, at least it’s not brought up. There’s a hot topic about being gay in our society. God loves gay people. He died for them. What tends to be forgotten is God does not approve of sexual relationships outside of a heterosexual marriage. This not only applies to gays but people living together before marriage. The sin is the same.

Many topics are addressed in this book. It’s a great reference book because we all go through different things at different times. It can be used to help a friend too. If a friend is struggling, the book has a topical index in the book that you can quickly find the answer to.

If you are a writer, you are in for a little extra surprise at the end of the book in an addendum called the Write Stuff.

A children’s book designed for ages 7 and up reminds me of the Magic Tree House books but with a Christian theme.

Cousins, Patrick and Beth meet a mysterious inventor named Mr. Whittaker. Mr. Whittaker has sent the cousins on an adventure to find a Sunstone. The curious kids travel to the year 1000 and they meet none other than Erik the Red! Erik the Red is not happy about the new God and makes that clear to the cousins.

Patrick and Beth find themselves in situations that cannot seem possible. They arrived by the Imagination Station but where is it now? How will they find their way back? Trapped in Greenland, the kids come face to face with Erik the Red and new challenges arise. Can God help them?

The book is appropriate for grades 1-3 depending on the maturity of the child. The chapter book is easy and fun to read. The chapters are short and others a little bit longer. Just enough to take a break and jump right back in. The drawing illustrations give kids another peek at what’s happening in the story. I think this helps kids to connect with Patrick and Beth. It’s a clever way to interweave the story with how it relates to God.

Magic Tree House fans will love the Imagination Station book series.

A Conversation with God by Alton Gansky

Jesus said that we would have trouble in this world. As Christians, we know this is true. Although we do not want to question God, we do.

I love this book and I’m keeping this one handy. It is a book about the many questions that we might ask God and the responses He might tell us in return. What’s different about this book is that not only do we hear from the character of God, we hear from other important biblical characters. Gansky is clever in using the different character voices such as Job, Abraham, Jeremiah, John the Baptist, and Peter just to name a few.

The main areas of the book include questions about God, Jesus, the Bible, Pain/Suffering, The Future, and Heaven and Hell as well as others.

I’m surprised at the negative reviews. I think this is a much needed book. I guess if you are a biblical scholar, then move on to something else. But, I think this book will bring people closer to God. Some books are so complicated that a new Christian may simply think it’s too hard. It’s not hard. It’s easier for us to discount God than vice versa. God created us in His image. He cannot help but love us. It’s the same with our children. How can you not love your child?

At the end of the book, Gansky includes notes that give biblical backup to his answers.

I think this book has the power to really understand God. For that, I’m keeping it close to my fingertips. Gansky prayed through each of these questions and answers. I pray for those who read it and may they be changed because of it.

It’s a realistic dream; however, many times we do not end up where we truly want to be. If this applies to you, then I recommend this book for your personal library.

The book’s main focus is exactly what the name implies. How do you get from where you are at this very moment to the place you want to be the next day, month, or year ahead?

Andy Stanley uses biblical examples to get his point across. Need some great advice? Read the Proverbs! Andy brings up the point that successful people achieve success by heading advice from other people. We can reach our dreams. Do you want to be debt free? Then reach out to others who have achieved that dream. If you reach out to someone who has twenty credit cards and most of them are maxed out, chances are you will not reach your desired dream.

Andy Stanley gives you the secret to reaching your dreams. It may seem simple when he tells you but then if the Principle of the Path is not applied, you will not reach your goals. However, in truth, in some cases your dream may not be realized and it may have nothing to do with the choices you made in your life. Andy addresses this sensitive issue. The core truth is God has to consume every part of your being and he must be included in your decisions through prayer and study of the bible. It is only through His eyes that true clarity will come to light.

Save the Date by Jenny B. Jones

I love reading Jenny B. Jones because I am never disappointed. Her stories are funny but can be serious at the same time.

Lucy is faced with the harsh reality that funding for her non-profit organization is being pulled. Saving Grace is literally saving kids that have graduated or left the foster care system.

Lucy is willing to do anything to keep Saving Grace. Sinclair Enterprises, the glue that held their organization together is pulling the plug. Lucy takes Alex Sinclair, the heir of Sinclair Enterprises head on.

Saving Grace can be saved but at what price? Her girls are more important to her than a temporary unpleasant situation. It will give Lucy her dreams of keeping it open. But, the situation is less than appealing. She has to agree to be Alex’s fiancée until he wins bid for Congress. The trick is being able to pull it off so that it’s believable. There’s a problem. There is another one in the picture that has reappeared in Lucy’s life. Can Lucy go through with the arrangement?

Jenny’s books are good to the last drop. I highly recommend her books. Because once you read one of her books, you will go looking for others she has written.

The title of the book is perfect. There are consequences of having sex prior to marriage. Sex is good within the context of marriage; the standard that God had in mind when He created it.

The most obvious consequence of having sex outside of marriage is teenage pregnancy. When teens think of sex, most of the time that’s their biggest concern. What many fail to realize is that there are many other consequences such as STD’s and the emotional impact it can have on them.

At first I wasn’t sure if this would be a good book or not. The author doesn’t give you a warm and fuzzy feeling. But, I digress. I believe that it has the potential to save teens from the heart breaking effects of having sex outside of God’s original intention. I read the book with the teen audience in mind. If I were a teen, some of the things may be easy to pass on. After all, God created sex so why wouldn’t he want two people married or not to have sex if they truly loved each other?

When you take medicine, there are always warning labels and side effects. This book gives you those side effects. After reading them, I’m convinced that it can stop teens (or even adults) to abstain from sex until marriage.

This book is written with teens in mind. There are black and white pictures of teens and the font is big and little for a teen appeal. It is labeled as Juvenile Nonfiction.

I recommend this book to any teen. I pray that teens will read this with an open mind. It’s easy to get emotionally attached to someone. But, waiting for marriage, will be the ultimate gift one can give to a future spouse.

iShine Bible NLT

The iShine Bible for tween boys is great! I love the leather-like feel and it’s small and compact. Boys do not want to carry around a big book. They want something that’s easy to carry and fun to use. My son has already claimed it by writing his name in the front cover.

In the beginning of the bible, there are several pages that help tweens to identify with Christ. It starts with the simple question, “What is the Bible?” It moves on to finding your identity with Jesus and growing in faith.

The next part is fun. I wish I had this type of bible when I was younger. It talks about several life issues such as complaining, teacher issues, anger, being kind, death, discouragement, family, friends, forgiveness, worship, and many other issue that are important to young people.

There are three sections that focus on something different. They are value, identity, and purpose. It’s colorful and fun to read. The best part is it gives you a link to check out and another fun way for kids to learn from others their age. It can be challenging to listen to an adult. But, when another young person can relate to your tween, there’s a good chance, they will listen.

I was pleasantly surprised upon checking out the iShine website. There is Christian tween music and videos, messages, and there is even a new Christian Broadcast Radio Show just for tweens!

She is on her way to Mexico to a village with no plumbing, electricity, or a decent place to sleep. She is a typical spoiled brat but is stubborn enough to go ahead and rough it out with the rest of them.

Kim learns that she will help rebuild homes in a remote village. Then she breaks her arm. Now what? God breaks through Kim’s heart through a precious girl named Anjelita and her mother, Rosa.

Kim reads from the Bible to the villagers in Spanish. Kim’s attempt to speak Spanish seems useless. She is not fluent in Spanish- not even close. The villagers have to correct her pronunciation. How can an entire group of evangelists go to Mexico with no Spanish to translate? Kim’s only option is to trust God.

Through a precious relationship with Anjelita, Kim learns to care for someone other than herself for a change. Kim is a big sister to Anjelita. Kim attempts to communicate with her surrogate little sister but it’s difficult for them both.

This would be a good book for someone who may want to go into missions. It is a sweet story about a young girl who had her own plans. But God intervened with His plans.

Possession by Rene Gutteridge

This is one of the first books that I’ve read from Rene. She may be the reason why I’m under the weather. I read this book in about two days. The only time I have time to read is after bedtime. It kept me up until 3:00 am the first day.

Vance Graegan is a Police Officer and has seen his fair share of detective work. He’s ready for a fresh start and to put his family first. Vance is finally able to relax until the movers decide to hold onto their possessions for ransom. To top it off, his son, Conner is asking for his toys. Conner does not give up hope and keeps the faith going for all of them.

Possession was a smooth story with great characters, plot, dialogue, and scenes. Rene is a master wordsmith. It’s true. If a story causes sleep deprivation, it’s not easy to write.

I heard on the radio this morning that the American’s dream is to be rich. Really? I’m not sure that’s such a great dream. We live in such a materialistic society. I’m not immune but the story, Possessions, reminded me what is really important in life. Personally, I think it’s better to focus on eternal rewards than possessions that will not go with us in the box.

I highly recommend this book. Mark Mynheir, a homicide detective and author, gives her book high marks. He knows the police drill and Rene has hit it on the head.

For tonight, I’m going to get some sleep.

The title, If God is Good; Faith in the Midst of Suffering and Evil, is perfect! There is no fluff in this book. It’s all meat and potatoes. If you want to dig deep into the subject of suffering, this book will quench your thirst. It is scripturally based and Randy Alcorn knows his stuff.

This book is divided into several sections. They include: understanding the difference between evil and suffering, how evil came into the world, case studies, our sin nature, moral standards, limiting God’s attributes, heaven and hell, why evil exists, and how to live a meaningful life in the midst of suffering.

This book challenges the reader to see things from a scriptural basis versus an emotional basis. If I am the one suffering, I will be emotional because I’m the one who is hurting. It made me think of being a parent. God is our perfect Father in Heaven. Yet, He allows suffering in our lives for His reasons. Being able to see it from His perspective is extremely difficult to see. We may or may not accept it. As a parent, I do what I think is best for my son versus what he may want. He doesn’t understand. When he was a baby, they gave him four shots at once. The nurses had to hold him down. He looked at me with his big brown eyes. I still remember the look. The look of how could you do this to me? It hurt both of us. Then I’m reminded how Jesus died on the cross for us. How painful God must have felt that he sacrificed his one and only son for me.

One day, all of our eyes will be opened and then we will understand.

I highly recommend Randy’s book for anyone who wants to dig deep into the Word of God and the difficult subject of good and evil. It would be an excellent resource for Pastors.

Don't Buy The Lie by Mark Matlock

The rest of the book title is ‘Discerning Truth in a World of Deception.’ This book tackles issues such as horoscopes, psychics, vampires, ghosts, and other ideas that can distract our attention from the truth. God’s truth.

Mark loved magic tricks and loved deceiving people through illusions. He was a junior member of the Magic Castle in Southern California at the age of 17. It’s all in fun, right?

The only problem is this continues on today. Psychics claim they can talk to your loved ones who passed on. They are able to get enough information from you to convince you that they really are contacting the dead and have a message for you. Even Hollywood plays into this role. Think about the movie, Ghost. The guy is murdered but hangs back until is girl is safe and then he moves into the light. It’s a great movie. But, it’s not reflective of scripture. Whenever you watch a movie or read a book, you must put it through the discernment filter. Mark suggests this: listen, learn, and compare it to scripture. The only way you will know the truth is by studying God’s word. Otherwise, you are opening yourselves up to deceptions that flood our world today.

Throughout the book, there are survey questions that are asked specifically to the teen crowd. For example, 21% of the teens surveyed believe that Satan is not a real being, but represents the conflict of good and evil (see page 57). That’s a big number!

It’s true that there is a hot debate among even Christians when it comes to watching movies or reading books that involve witchcraft or vampires. If you watch Twilight and it makes you want to be a vampire, research the idea of them and obsess about it, then it is keeping you from following Christ. And no, vampires do not exist so don’t look for them.

The key theme throughout the book is deception. We live in a big world of deceit. People fall for some things that are good but there are lies mixed in that keep them from the truth. Angels are good. But, they are not God. We are to worship God not Angels.

I would recommend the book for teens and youth pastors.

Premiere by Melody Carlson

Erin and Paige both love cameras. Erin loves to be behind the camera. Paige thrives in front of the camera. Otherwise, they are total opposites. Both get their chance to be in the spotlight when they appear in teen reality show. They use that show to create exposure of their new show.

I loved the characters. They each had their distinctive characteristics. Being in the story of TV Reality was interesting. I realize that this is a work of fiction but I do believe that it’s not too far off the mark. The audience loves to see conflict and drama. The game is figuring out the true friends and enemies. Add a guy and a couple of girls to create frenemies – a person who pretends to be your friend for their own gain.

This book reminded me the Big Brother Reality show. You have characters constantly putting ‘on an act’ for the camera. You really didn’t know who was telling the truth.

There was a faith element that is subtle. I find it interesting that some reviewers are put off when they find out that the Christian faith is part of the plot. It might be helpful for reviewers to do a little bit of research on the publisher before agreeing to read and review a book. With that in mind, the faith aspect is sprinkled throughout because Erin is a Christian and it is part of her character.

This book appeared to be character driven versus plot driven. There was a plot but it felt more like a slice of life. I would recommend this book for ages 10-12.

This is a practical, no-nonsense guide to overcome 7 money myths that Christians seem to be susceptible to. Endorsed by Dave Ramsey, the creator of Financial Peace University, the book caught my eye. Because I’ve been through Dave Ramsey’s stuff, this book solidified it even more. I believe it’s a good complement to his teachings.

The book is packed with stories that show how Christians stay broke by falling for the myths. Having said that, it is not a book only for Christians. It debunks many myths that people fall for in the name of the Bible. I fell for some of these myths many years ago. I do not entertain them any longer. One such example is helping another in need. Yes, you should help them. But, at some point, they need to be weaned. They need to get that job, go to school, and at 30 – move out of the house.

In each chapter, there are sidebars (I love sidebars). They emphasize part of the book that cements the concept in your mind. There is a specific prayer at the end of each chapter specific to that topic. There is another section called God’s Way. For example, on the subject of enabling – We have to truthfully evaluate whether our assistance is helping someone or keeping that individual stuck in a cycle of dependence. Make sense? I think so! The final part of the chapter is entitled Solution Steps, steps that can be taken immediately to help the situation today.

I would recommend this book to a person who is struggling with the Christian viewpoint of money. It’s not rocket science but it helps another person realize when they are being trapped in their beliefs about money, and fighting to get out.

Karen Kingsbury has penned a wonderful novel about being locked in the world of autism.

As with all Karen’s novels, she never disappoints. She tackled autism head on. This is not an easy subject to write on.

Holden Harris is locked into the world of autism. He is unable to communicate. He is an easy target and becomes bullied.

Ella appears to have it all including having Jake as her boyfriend. She is shocked to see him bully Holden. She takes a stand. Ella is drawn to Holden but doesn’t know why. It’s in his eyes, no doubt. He connects with her. Why?

It turns out that Ella and Holden were best friends as young children. They danced and sang together and the parents thought they would go to the prom one day. Autism and a lack of understanding took that chance away. Will Ella and Holden ever dance again as they once did?

Although, Holden is unable to communicate, Karen does a wonderful job in showing Holden’s thoughts. Kids with autism are no different than any of us. They love others more easily. They are kind to everyone. They do not judge.

Holden can hear the music. Music may be the key to unlocking his autism. Do you hear the music? Unless we stop and take the time to listen, we never will.

It makes you think, “Where do my treasures lie?” and greed is evident among the key factors in this story.

If you like murder mystery with a Christian theme, this is a book to read.

Personal Commentary:

How many times do you hear someone wishing they had more money or winning the lottery? It’s not greed necessarily. I believe it’s to get away from the mundane of living the same story each day. Day after day, many people desire for more money so they can quit their jobs, travel, and live life. Is that what Jesus would want? I think life can be better. Take the focus off yourself and focus on others. Do a random act of kindness for another. Be there for when your friend calls. Read to your kids. Our life is short on this side. We will die, let’s store up our treasures in heaven.

Brandilyn takes you on a Roller Coaster ride. You want to get off but you resist. You keep turning the pages. The story is a mystery. It’s fun to try and figure it all out. What really happened in the Baxter household?

I had a 100 pages left and had to get up early for work. It didn’t matter. I stayed up until past midnight because I kept saying a few more pages. Then I decided to ignore the clock and finish the book. Was it worth it? Without a shadow of a doubt, what’s sleep anyway?

The long anticipated third book of the reinvention of Skylar Hoyt does not disappoint.

Have you ever wanted to move somewhere no one knows you? I know that I have. Skylar has her chance to move to Hawaii with her grandparents. It is perfect. It’s a great place to live, beautiful weather, and a chance to make anew.

The journey begins. Skylar is staying in Hawaii for the summer. She meets new friends and a cute guy to boot. Her family is with her but her old boyfriend is not. What could be better? The time comes for her family to leave. She must make a final decision to stay in Hawaii or leave. She can leave the old life behind. But, then there is a part of the old life that she still wants to hold onto. Skylar realizes that you cannot have it both ways.

The theme of the book is forgiveness. It’s difficult to forgive someone and ultimately confront another person if necessary to heal. To forgive oneself can seem virtually impossible. I’m not perfect and I’ve made mistakes. Big ones. I can be forgiven but I can never take away my part. Only Jesus can take it away from me. I have to be willing to hand it over.

If you haven’t read the first two books, I recommend reading them to get the full effect. Each book can be a stand-alone novel. Stephanie provides enough information that you would not be lost.

I’m looking forward to future novels by Stephanie Morrill.

With the popularity of Facebook, the theme of the book peaked my interest. It’s so easy to ‘friend others’ and ‘accept friend requests.’ This book makes you really think. It’s easy to think the face you see is the person who is friend requesting you. Maybe it is. Maybe it’s not.

This book is a reminder to all of us. Be careful. There’s a new feature called ‘places’ on Facebook. You can allow others to view where you are at any given moment. Some of my friends allow that. I do not. If I am, I am not aware of it. Limit your friends. There are some people who are choosing to eliminate anyone that they have not had face-to-face contact with.

The characters and storyline kept me reading from beginning to end. In some cases, I read the sentences twice because it struck a chord. It’s a suspense filled book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a story that they cannot put down.

Max delivers a powerful message on outliving your life.

This is a book about ordinary people making extraordinary decisions to outlive their life. It’s overwhelming to think of all the problems in our world. It’s easy to think that we cannot make a difference. What can one person do? The secret is we are not one person. Together we are millions. We can make a huge difference.

God made us all to make a difference. No exception. It’s easy to dismiss the homeless guy. There’s a story behind every homeless person. There’s a story behind you. We all have a story. There is a plot to our story. We can affect the plot of another person’s life. How great is that? We could adopt a sponsor child. We could give them less than $100 and it would give them a cow. Awesome! We can pray for that child and their family. By outliving your life, you can affect another person who can then outlive their life.

Max Lucado is an exceptional storyteller. He’s able to retell the stories in the Bible and make them feel as though it’s happening now. He’s able to dissect the story and put it in an easy to understand format that all of us can understand.

Before each chapter, Max includes a scripture and a prayer. I must admit this is my favorite part of the book. It gives the reader a prayer to take to heart. You can take the prayer and make it your own. God looks at the heart and He will listen.

I recommend this book to others to encourage them to outlive their life by making a difference in others.

I enjoyed this children’s book better than the gift book.

It’s a history lesson and tells a delightful story that I believe the kids will enjoy. It starts out with a boy named Norman who changed the world. As the story unfolds, we learn that it could have been another person who changed the world. Then another. Who actually changed the world? The answer is the Butterfly Effect.

We all are part of the Butterfly Effect in this world. Kids do not have to be adults to make a difference to the world. Children have a great impact on others. Who most? I would say the parents because we cannot imagine life without our kids. How we parent them can and will create a butterfly effect. Our kids are like sponges. It creates a template for their lives. Let’s make their template great by remembering that we are creating a butterfly effect on them.

I loved the children’s book because it teaches that we all matter in this world. Children will learn that they can make a difference. The picture they draw for their mom? Yes, it makes a difference. The song they sing? Yes, it makes a difference. Helping with the housework? Yes, it makes a difference. There are no exceptions. Everything they do makes a difference.

I recommend parents read this book to their kids. Why? Because it will make a difference!

This gift book is based on the Butterfly Effect. A butterfly can flap its wings and it can create an impact on the other side of the planet.

The book has snappy short sentences with background images that make the reader think, “Do I make a difference?” The answer is an astounding, “Yes!”

We all are created in God’s image. We are not a mistake. How we react today towards others can and will make a difference. I truly believe you can impact a total stranger. You could pass by a stranger and they could be on the verge of suicide and you’d never know. But, what if you made a decision to smile at everyone that you see? What if your smile made a difference? What if you bought the person behind you a cup of coffee? Random acts of kindness can do wonders. Not only that, it’s fun! And it creates a butterfly effect. I’ve seen it happen. The person is pleasantly surprised and decides to do the same thing to the person behind them.

Andy Andrews gives a history example of the Butterfly Effect. I’ll leave the example for the reader to discover.

This book reminded me of the TV movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” George Bailey didn’t think his life matter until he was shown. Let’s not wait until we need to be shown. Let’s live life today as if it matters. Because it does!

I would recommend this book as a gift book especially to someone who may not think they do matter. It’s a good reminder that we do make a difference in this life. Let’s make it count!

The Heavens Proclaim His Glory

I requested this book because my son loves to look up at the sky at night and tell me how beautiful it is. He will say, “Mom, look at the stars.”

This out of this world (pun intended) tabletop book is a beautiful illustration of God’s handiwork. It is a page-turner. Each flip of the page is another stunning photograph of the galaxies, stars, planets, polarized light, nebula, black hole, and the changing faces of Pluto. These are just a few of the photographs highlighted in the book. Quotes, scriptural verses, and commentary saturate the book.

I know God created the Universe. I know it’s vast and more than I could ever comprehend. I learned quickly how little I really did know after reading this book. I used to think galaxies and all the space stuff was boring. The explanations along with the beautiful photography snapped the boredom away. My attention was held until I looked at every single picture.

This book reminded me of God’s magnificent glory. We have our own image of what heaven will be like. I venture to bet we are off the mark. It is more beautiful than we can ever imagine. We have a film over our eyes and one day the film will be removed. We will be unable to speak. We may have to cover our eyes from the blinding beauty. But, then God will adjust our world to meet His and it will be the best reunion that you will ever have. It will be a time that you will wonder why we worried about the things of this earth.

I highly recommend this book. This is one that you will want to keep out ~ on our tabletop for all to see. His magnificent creation should not be missed!

God clearly tells us to give Him our burdens but do we?

Chris delves into the heart of burdens that we are plagued with. It’s easy to say, “Trust God.” How do you do this when something dramatic happens such as illness or job loss? We forget that in Biblical times, it was no different. What about Job? It’s easy to think that Job is a character in a story. It’s real. His family really did die. It’s not pretend. I’m confident that I will accept my life over Job’s any day.

Chris brings up some interesting stuff. One thing that peaked my interest is hearing God’s voice. He talks about how ‘we think we need a certain amount in savings’ for our old age. I believe we should do our part. Guess what? God might have other plans. We do not see the same way He does. There’s God’s voice and then there is ‘our voice.’

These are hard times especially now with the economy. Jesus reminds us that we will have trouble but He has overcome the world. Amen!

If you are feeling burdened by life, pick up this book. There is a ton more stuff that Chris talks about in his book. You will clearly see that what may be a ‘burden’ in our life may turn into a ‘blessing.’

Searching for God Knows What by Donald Miller

Donald Miller has a unique style of telling stories of faith that is thought provoking but not simple by any means.

Reading his stories is like a peek inside his mind. He tells of the 9-1-1 events and how losing three thousand people in the United States is small in comparison to the thousands that are killed each day in the Middle East. He tells how the Arabs were treated in the United States after that event.

I remember watching the horrible news that fateful day. It was surreal. All different emotions were evident throughout the day. Some were in shock and numb. Others felt community with others and talked about it. Still others cried. Some businesses went on as if nothing happened. Others closed.

I love to know what’s going on in the mind of others. Donald Miller holds nothing back. He tells you like it is. His book reminds me of a diary. It’s an inside view of how he thinks and perceives the world. It does seem to jump around a bit. I start get interested in what else he’s going to say about a particular subject and he’s moved on.

We relate to stories. Jesus told stories. Donald tells the story through his eyes. It’s up to us how we perceive it.

If you love Donald Miller’s previous books, this one will be no exception.

I have followed Mary since the beginning. I started with Watching the Tree Limbs and have been hooked ever since.

I’m not sure if this has changed, but I heard that no one has guessed who the killer is. I thought I figured it out. Lo and behold, I was wrong. She kept me guessing. To make sure I was the one who cracked the code, I picked more than one person. Nope. No can do. The best books are the ones that keep you guessing. This book does that. If you do guess it, you are the exception.

So Over My Head by Jenny B. Jones

There are some authors that you grow to love. You anticipate their new releases. Jenny B. Jones is one of those. They say that there’s a little bit of the author in each book that they write. I think that’s why her books are easy to love. Jenny’s easy to love. No, I do not know her personally. But, I stalk her on facebook. She is an absolute funny person. If you are feeling down, go read her facebook. You will smile.

Bella has been thrown a loop. Her father is getting remarried and Bella’s investigative instincts are awaken. Although Bella cannot pinpoint exactly what’s going on. She stops at nothing to find out.

Back on the home front, a killer is on the loose. Bella is determined to figure out who the killer is before he/she strikes again. The countdown is on and Bella seems to be the one who fits the pieces together. Can she stop the killer?

If that’s not enough, her on and off again boyfriend, Luke is giving her grief. Is Luke the one for her?

One of the best parts of the book (besides the awesome storyline) is the All-Access Bonus Content in the back of the book. Throughout the story, there is an * and that’s a clue to go look at the story behind that story snippet. I hope to see more of these in future books.

This is the third in the Charmed Life Series. This novel can stand on its own. However, I recommend you checking out the first two in this series.

Thicker than Blood by C.J. Darlington

I love to read new authors. There are some real gems. C.J. Darlington is one of them. She has penned a wonderful novel about forgiveness.

The character development, plot, dialogue, and setting were on target. The characters were real. You felt the scenes.

Two sisters. Two separate lives separated by years due to a tragic event. How could a stolen Hemingway First Edition Book bring them together once again? Can the past be forgiven?

Christy Williams works for Dawson’s Book Barn. She loves her job and is given the opportunity to step up in that role by taking a lead in an auction.

On the other end of the spectrum, May Williams is part ownership in Triple Cross Ranch. The bank has issued a demand letter to pay up or lose the ranch. She hasn’t seen her sister, Christy in years and longs to be reconnected, as sisters should be.

Christy Williams will do anything not to see her sister again. Circumstances make that impossible and May is her only hope. She lands on May’s doorstep.

It’s evident that May Williams is a Christian. Christy doesn’t want to hear about it. What has God done for her? She’s only experienced trouble her entire life. It’s getting worse not better.

The novel has a satisfying ending and you will want to hand the book to someone else to read.

I look forward in reading C.J. Darlington’s future works.

Inspirational Zingers Jumble by Christopher Hudson

Do you love words?

This book reminded me of puzzles that I did when I was younger. It would be great to have with you if you were waiting for an appointment or had a few minutes to spare. I think I will keep this in my car for lunch breaks or surprise appointments.

There are six types of jumbles provided in this book. It’s not only a jumble but there’s a reward at the end. You complete a quote, sentence, or identify a mystery person.

Each jumble has a main theme. Word search jumble number 9 is about perseverance. There are six words to unscramble. There is one or two letters circled in each word. Those you need to unscramble to fill in the zinger. Then you find the word in the word search.

As for me, I’m going to keep it handy in my car. There have been many times that I’ve thought I should have had something in the car to read (besides facebook).

I recommend this for upper elementary students who love words and learn a lesson at the same time.

A great devotional for youth, the Word of Promise Next Generation is easy and fun to read. As an adult, I enjoyed it immensely. It teaches without preaches.

This is part of a devotional guide series. It is focused on How Should a Christian Live? It includes a MP3 CD to help youth cement the concept in their hearts.

As stated in the description, Thomas Nelson used the eye-catching approach to help understand the stories and concepts in the bible. It’s described as GET-IT, GRAB-IT, HOLD-IT, GIVE-IT, DEFINE IT, and LIVE IT. How does that look? In session four, it’s about the concept of faith. Thomas doubted Jesus had come back to life. He had to see it. Faith is belief that Jesus exists even though we cannot see Him (GET-IT). A fun word search (look for faith) cleverly titled Finding Faith. The GRAB-IT is comparing the wind with knowing Jesus. We can feel the wind but cannot see it. The scripture for this lesson is Hebrews 11:1. The DEFINE-IT portion is the heart and how it relates to the human spirit. This is only a portion of what the lesson offers.

I loved this book even though it’s designed for youth. It includes many puzzles like word searches, scramble, fill in the blank, code deciphering, etc. For some, reading the Bible may be daunting but it makes it much easier when there’s a devotional to go with it. You can read the scripture in context and the devotional to bring it to life.

The best part of the book is how it applies to our lives today and a journaling section. Journaling is a great way to document spiritual growth. I highly recommend this book for today’s youth!

I Love God's Green Earth by Michael and Caroline Carroll

Great Devotional!

I loved this devotional book!

It’s a 90-day devotional and each day it’s broken down by the following parts:

• It starts each day with a scripture verse that correlates with the lesson.
• A short story of facts that surround our earth.
• Connection – how does it relate to us today or to the bible.
• Fun or amazing fact or news flash.
• Jokes
• What can I do?

There are drawings/pictures each day, which make it more fun for the kids. My son flipped through the book and found the devotion that he wanted to start with. It was Day 32 entitled ‘Disneyland’s Green Train.’ It talks about how Disneyland opened in 1955 and now the Disneyland Railroad has gone green. It’s estimated that this change has saves 200,000 gallons of diesel fuel each year! The What Can I do portion tells us that we can rejoice in God’s power. There is nothing stronger than the Power of God.

Our action step as a family is to remember that God is in control over all of His Creation. Jesus reminds us that we will have trouble in the world but He has overcome the world. When things get difficult, we will look towards God instead of away from Him.

I recommend this book for kids up to age 12. I highly suggest a small discussion afterwards on how each family can make a difference on God’s Earth. If everyone took one small step, it can make a huge difference. We each need to do our part.

Everyone Connects Few Connect by John C. Maxwell

Connection is the key to all communication. This applies whether it’s personal or business. John Maxwell has taken the communication to the next level by including excerpts of the people that he has come across via the Internet. His book design is represented of that fact. One concept that seemed to be apparent throughout the book is caring about people. People are not going to listen to you or care if you do not care about them. You cannot fake it. They will know the difference.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is in a leadership position or anyone who has to speak in front of the audience. He delves into the specifics of speaking in front of others including how to be comfortable which may be sitting instead of standing. He covers how to engage the audience. Using humor is an excellent way to achieve that goal. Wondering how to connect one on one versus a group? He covers it. This book is not limited to high-level managements business owners and speakers. Speaking for a longer period of time doesn’t necessary make it a better speech. It’s like writing. You can write 1000 words but if 700 are fluff, that’s a waste. This is the same with connecting with others especially with an audience. Go on too long and they will tune out.

If you are looking for a way to connect better with others, this may be the book you have been waiting for.

Thin Places by Mary E. DeMuth

This book is best described as poetic bravery. This is a moving, heart-wrenching story about the effects of sexual abuse on a child. It’s difficult to find God during those times. But He’s there. Mary meets God in those thin places.

The book cuts deep to the core. It’s easy for someone on the outside to expect the abused to ‘get over it.’ Mary cuts deep. She shows the emotional impact on her life. The pain is like being cut with a knife. It’s there. Yes, it heals but the scar is there. The book delves into those scars which are really invisible to everyone else. The depression, worthless feelings, thoughts of suicide is real to those who have been victimized. It carries forward to your marriage, your kids, and your friendships.

Mary’s book reads like poetry. She has an innate ability to string words together like a beautiful song. She can find God in the ugly places. I admire her to being the voice for many. If you or you know someone who has been abused, please steer them towards this book. It will show them that they are not alone. God was there with them in the thin places.

If you are looking for novels that show characters finding God in the thin places, I highly recommend Watching the Tree Limbs and Wishing on Dandelions, novels written by Mary E. DeMuth.

The Gospel According to Lost by Chris Seay

I gobbled this book up. Chris Seay is a pastor who made me think outside of the box. This is not only a great book for LOST fans but for other authors to analyze. Seay analyzes each character in depth.

Who is the man of faith? Who is the man of science? Who is the leader at the beginning of the Season One? Who is the leader by the end of Season Five? Why?

Chris Seay delves deep into the goal, motivation, and conflict of each character. Like all good characters, there is plenty of conflict: internal and external. This is why we love this show. We all are motivated to reach a goal but conflict stands in our way.

One aspect is clear. We are all shaped by our past. This is evident in each of the characters in LOST. It can have a huge impact on how you view life today. I believe the trick is to not be fooled by that. The negative influences do not have to overtake your life. Dig deep into the Word of God and your path will be made straight.

The LOST TV show has broken precedent by taking several diverse people and throwing them together. They learn to work together as a team. Then they find out that there are OTHERS. Then there’s the mysterious Jacob.

Seay, being a church planter and pastor, ties the LOST show to specific scriptures. There appears to be a correlation between characters in the bible versus the TV show. If you are a true fan of LOST, I believe you will love this book. I highly recommend it.

Out With The In Crowd

Skylar Hoyt has changed. She left the party life behind. She’s with a great guy, Connor. All appears to be going well. It seems like every time she turns around, her old friends pop up. It would be great except she’s not like them.

Not only is Skylar dealing with her mom who seems to disappear and reappear, she’s dealing with her younger sibling (Abbie) who is pregnant. Part of her wants to escape. She is given an opportune time to do that. But can she leave Connor and Abbie behind? Connor has breached her trust. Why should she stay?

Like her first book, she had great characterization, great plot, and satisfying ending. At the end of the book, you take a deep breath and say, “Now that’s a good story.” If I had to name the theme of the story, it would be learning to trust. Ultimately, people may fail us but Jesus never does.

Stephanie is one author that I will keep my tabs on. She is going to be such a great impression to our young people today.

I loved Stephanie’s first book. This book is even better! Her next book is coming out in July 2010. I almost wish I read this later. Then I could jump right into the next one. Maybe I’ll put this on my June list to read again.

Farraday Road by Ace Collins

Lije Evans and his wife are gunned down on Farraday Road. Detective Mikki Stuart stumbles upon the crash scene and signals for backup. When the backup arrives, she’s gone. Disappeared.

Lije Evans is on a quest to find Kaitlyn’s, his wife’s killer. Heather Jameson, lawyer who works with Lije becomes a suspect. Lije doesn’t believe it. The challenge is to convince Agent Diana Curtis that Heather is innocent.

The entire story is a true mystery. The mystery lies within Slope’s Ridge. It’s only after his wife, Kaitlyn has been gone, that Lije finds out her involvement in Slope’s Ridge. What she meant to be a blessing turns into a curse.

The closer Lije gets to finding out some of the mysteries, the more he is used for target practice. The more he investigates, the more he fights to keep from being hit by bullets.

The novel ends up being quite a bit about history and hidden treasures. The back cover copy was misleading. I thought the book was going to be about the murder and finding out who did it. You are no closer to finding out the truth than at the beginning of the book. Nothing is resolved.

It’s only through the power of meeting Jesus that we have the strength to move on with confidence and faith.

Read the story and be prepared to look deep within.

Becoming More Than A Good Bible Study Girl by Lysa Terkeurst

Lysa Terkeurst’s transparency is evident throughout the book. I could relate to many things mentioned in her book such as the desire to receive the Really Good Mommy Reward.

The book is practical and applicable to everyday life. I especially enjoyed the part of how to study the bible verse by verse. I thought that was for the really smart bible girls. Lysa broke it down step by step and gave an example to follow. It’s the first time, I didn’t get lost in trying to figure out how to study the bible.

She talks about gossip. It can not only harm others but can shut them down. Instead, focus on giving uplifting words to other women. If you can find a woman who you can trust to tell anything to, I would treasure that friendship. It’s easy to be friends with anyone. Real, true friends are few indeed. Guard that friend as if your life depends on it. She is your lifeline when the going gets tough.

Jesus is the glue that holds us together. Make sure you spend quality time in prayer with Him. It doesn’t have to be at a specific time at a specific place. It’s in your heart. We are spoiled in America – at least for the present moment. Give thanks in all things. They are all around us if we take the time to look.

I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with their daily life and their relationship with Jesus. I have no doubt, Lysa is the real deal.

Bella has given herself a name in solving mysteries that surround Truman High School. This time, the prom queen candidates are the target. Luke, the newspaper editor-in-chief calls the shots for Bella and decides which stories she will write and investigate. Luke gives Bella mixed signals and she reciprocates the same. Getting closer to the truth, can be a dangerous feat. Will it be discovered before it’s too late?

Bella loves to visit her Dad but things get a little complicated with his new girlfriend. Her ex-boyfriend, Hunter, helps her escape some of the heat by showing up or calling at the right time. After what happened with him before, can she trust him again? She begins to talk to God again. Will her heart be open to His answer?

I loved this book. As with Jenny’s other books, she is out-loud funny! I highly recommend her books to all for great stories and tons of laughter!

The Tallest of Smalls by Max Lucado and Illustrated by Maria Monescillo

The Tallest of Smalls is a delightful story about a young boy, Ollie, who eagerly waits to be picked to receive a set of stilts. The stilts will prove that he’s someone important. Each evening, the Too Smalls of Stiltsville gather together and wait to see who will be chosen. To Ollie’s surprise, he is chosen!

To Ollie’s dismay, being at the top with his stilts is no fun after all. He struggles and ultimately falls. No one is there to catch him except the One that really matters.

The story is another twist to show that we are not a mistake. We are all made of different shapes, sizes, colors, and perfect.

I think we are all guilty at one time or another of wanting to fit in and be part of the crowd. Or even climb the ladder. As Ollie learns, it can be quite alone at the top and one can fall. Hard.

No matter how far or hard we fall, Jesus is there for us. We are made in His image. Ollie realizes this. He was never insignificant in the eyes of Jesus.

This 32 page book is beautifully illustrated by Maria Monescillo. I can hear the kids begging their parents, “read it again!”

A Slow Burn by Mary DeMuth

Mary’s new book, A Slow Burn, a follow-up from Daisy Chain is powerful beyond description.

Emory Chance is emotional and she has every right to be. Her daughter, Daisy, has been murdered. She is on a mission to find the killer. Due to her own selfish choices, she feels that maybe she is the real cause of her death. If that’s the case, how do you ever forgive yourself?

This book is so powerful. If you know of anyone who has had a difficult childhood or life, or striving to forgive oneself for the unthinkable, this book is a must-read. If you are the one touched by sadness, then this book may change your thought patterns. I think that having a less than perfect childhood may be more often the case than not.

Personally, this book touched me to my emotional core. It made me think about how I look at things, the power of forgiveness, and the choices that I have made or have yet to make.

I thank Mary so much for bringing shining a BRIGHT light into the dark tunnel of despair. You will realize that no matter what your circumstances are – you are NOT alone. God loves you. When you wept, so did He.

This book is staying on my book shelf. I pray that it will touch your lives as deeply as it touched mine.

What's He Really Thinking? by Paula Rinehart

Ever struggle to figure out what men think? They are much less complicated than we realize. We are able to love them more by taking the time to understand them.

There are some general types of men that we will run across. They are The Fighter, The Protector, The Adventurer, The Builder, The Nurturer, The Reflective, and the Scientist. The Fighter is the man that will be there to help in a time of need (such as a car breakdown). According to Paula Rinehart, he can be described as a pit bull and anger will be his downfall. Rinehart describes each category and what you can expect.

The most interesting aspect to me is that women are able to read facial expressions much more accurately than men. If we were hooked up to computers, an average of six times as many neurons will light up in a woman’s brain compared to a man’s.

Men are the happiest when they are respected by the women in our lives including their wife, daughter, niece, etc.

I give it three stars because it failed to keep my attention. I'm not sure if it's because I've heard and read the same stuff before or it wasn't my type of book.

There is much more covered in the book. She includes a section for guidance on praying for the men in your life, understanding him, and in-depth questions for each chapter that is covered.

I loved The Familiar Stranger. It kept me on my toes until the very end. It was a moment of wishing I could call in sick the next day. Tell me more about the Familiar Stranger.

The Familiar Stranger is about a couple going through a really rough patch in their marriage. When an accident incapacitates the husband, their relationship must be redefined. Which would be a lot easier to do if BIG secrets from his past didn’t raise their ugly heads. Despite the upheaval, the choices they make involving forgiveness and trust might allow a new beginning. Or … they might not.

Wow, how did you come up with this story?

In the summer of 2006, two stories appeared in the newspaper. One was a huge, national story; the other a smaller, local-interest item. I wondered what it might look like if those two stories conceived a child. Boom! I had the entire plot for The Familiar Stranger. It will be interesting to see if readers can figure out which stories inspired the book.

I like a challenge. I’ll have to think about that one! Have you always love to write?

Buried deep within my closet, one might find some angst-filled poetry from my teenage years and a very spooky seven pages of the novel I started in high school. Though I was in love with the idea of being a writer, it wasn’t until I finished college and stayed home with my first child that I actually decided to write a book. Truthfully, my mom told me we were going to write one together, and being the obedient daughter I am …

Obedient indeed! How long did it take to get published?

My mother, Sherrie Ashcraft, and I began writing in the summer of ’99. We figured the accountability of having a co-writer would make us actually do what we’d always dreamed of but never put action to. It took a long road of learning how much we didn’t know, tons of re-writing, brooding over rejections, making connections, pitching at conferences, and directional prayer to make our writing salable.

In the summer of 2007, when Mom was busy caring for her dying mother-in-law, I got the itch of a new story idea. Undiscovered was written by February 2008, edited by June, won second place in the ACFW Genesis Contemporary category, and was renamed The Familiar Stranger and contracted by Moody Publishers in October.

One decade from naïve first scribbles to debut novel!

ACFW (http://www.acfw.com) is great place for authors and aspiring authors. I’m a current member and it’s the best out there. You get to rub shoulders with others (like Christina!) and learn from one another. We talk about anything from developing your characters, plots, and themes to rejections. Speaking of rejections, how do you handle them?

I pout and throw things.

No, really, I believe my skin has thickened from the 47 rejections I’ve received over the years. I tend to get down for a day or two, but know God directs more clearly (in my life) through “no” than through “yes.”

Each rejection means a writer is one step closer to finding the perfect publishing home.

The story about Craig and Denise is powerful. They say that there’s a little bit of the author in the characters. Is that the case with The Familiar Stranger?

Any character has some aspect of my personality, for better or worse. I can only write what I know. I’ve seen a richness develop in my writing as I’ve grown in my faith and walked through some valleys in the last decade.

Denise and Craig’s story is based on the lessons of forgiveness God taught me when my marriage fell apart … the first time. Accordingly, many of the emotions Denise goes through correspond to what I felt, though our situations differ. However, I also wanted to really understand the male perspective, so Craig had parts of me in him as well. The path away from God and following temptation is something we can all recognize and, unfortunately, identify with.

During the editing process and years after my husband and I reunited, our marriage of thirteen years unexpectedly ended. The words I had written as a happily married woman ministered to me in my singleness. My heart’s hope is that this book will lead people to Live Transparently—Forgive Extravagantly!

For the readers-wannabe writers that would like to be published one day, what is the best advice you can give?

(If you've been writing for years and have yet to get published, this is especially for you!) To start a new novel.

I'm a stubborn girl—just ask my parents. My mother and I reworked and reworked a co-authored story for eight years, each time putting our newly acquired writing knowledge/skills to use. We were determined that it wouldn't end up in a box in the closet or shoved under the bed. I still love that manuscript, and it's actually very close to selling as I write this, but it wasn't until I took the advice of others far sager and experienced with writing to start a new novel that I finally made my first sale.

What was the worst advice you were given?

At a Christian conference, I met with a New York agent. The conference doesn't require the faculty to sign any kind of statement of faith, though it is blatantly Christian in tone. The man actually told me replacing "Jesus" with "God" would make an easier sale and not offend as many people.

With all due respect, excuse me? The very Cross itself is offensive. (See Galatians 5:11) I'm going to use the name of Jesus because in His name dwells power and glory and honor. And really, because when you love Someone, even His name is beloved.

I love that you are transparent with your faith. How does writing fit into your spiritual life?

I see writing as one of the tools He uses to form me into His image—a tool to teach me patience, self-control, determination, reliance on Him, and other life lessons. I also see writing as a gift that brings me hope, fulfillment, and purpose when the rest of life is not so nice. The journey has sharpened me, yet also softened me.

I loved The Familiar Stranger and am excited to hear that you are working on another book. You have a newsletter too? Can you tell me more?

I’m about 1/5 of the way through my next manuscript, Unafraid, a story about a girl’s kidnapping, and how her life unfolds because of the trauma. One of my characters is a PI, so I’m having loads of fun with the research.

You are busy! What is a typical writing day like for you?

For one short year after my youngest was in school and before becoming a foster parent, I would write or market from 9-2:45 with a short lunch break. This last year has been more sporadic, with email and online marketing in the morning along with frequent breaks to play with or get snacks for the child in my care. Lunch with her, then phone marketing, editing, and writing while she naps. After dinner and once the kids are in bed, I usually log 1-3 more hours of work time.
I’ve found I’m most productive at actually writing when I play games with myself. For instance, I might write down all the chores I have to do on one side of a paper and my word count in hundred word increments on the other. For every hundred words I write, I complete any chore. In a few hours, I’ve made good progress on both lists. Many writers hate to “interrupt” their writing time like that, but my brain seems to process better with frequent breaks and words spill out when I set back down at the keyboard.

Of course, if I get a call to substitute teach, I don’t get much done that day!

I know that you have been through a painful divorce. Do you have a favorite verse that keeps you going? One that keeps you writing?

This is constantly changing! During the divorce, my agent, Sarah Van Diest, sent this verse to me: “For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose hearts are completely His.” 2 Chronicles 16:9 Completely His: that’s what I want to be.

For writing, I like James 1:2-3. “Consider it pure joy, my [fellow writers], whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (NIV) If we’re experiencing rejection after rejection on a manuscript, it's not the right time or there’s still something to be added. I think of the timing God planned out for my marriage to end as this book releases and I am awed and astounded at His love for me.

But if I could pick a verse to symbolize The Familiar Stranger it would be this one: “The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."1 Samuel 16:7

Denise knows that Craig is not himself. When he decides to skip church to go hiking, she doesn’t fight it. In the middle of church service, she takes a phone call that changes her life. Craig has been in an accident. Could she have prevented the accident? If only she had persuaded him to go with them instead.

Denise rushes to his side and vows that she will do everything in her power to make their marriage work. It will take much more than her effort because he has amnesia and doesn’t even know his own wife. Not wanting to hurt his two boys, he wills himself to do what he would normally do (as told by Denise) with them even though he doesn’t remember them. This is a chance for them to start over. Or is it?

Craig is tore apart in attempting to regain his memories. The more he remembers, the deeper the secrets lie. Each secret revealed digs a deeper hole for Craig. Can Denise remain by his side and forgive him?

This was a difficult book to put down. I thought I had it all figured out but I was wrong. Christina Berry kept my attention the entire book. It was full of plot twists and surprises. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling in their marriage or not. The characters remain with you after the book has ended.

Find Your Strongest Life by Marcus Buckingham

I expected this book to tell me how I can do it all. As a mom, I wear many hats. I work 40 hours a week and it’s tough to be all things to everyone. I’m not called to be and do everything. I am called to live my best and strongest life. The beneficiaries will be your family, friends, and co-workers. I wish I would have figured out the concept explained in this book a long time ago.

It’s a myth to think you should pursue a career in a particular area because you are good at it. You may be good at customer service, but that doesn’t mean you should necessarily be in that type of job. There’s a difference between being good at something and finding fulfillment in what you do. How do you do that? Marcus Buckingham has made it quite simple for you to figure it out. Keep track of what you do for a week. Write down those moments that filled you up and the ones that drain you. This means you will need to be intentional in noticing the moments. I used to work in customer service. The average phone calls during the day could easily be around 80. I was good at it. But, I wasn’t fulfilled.

If you are having a difficult time figuring it out, Marcus has provided a quiz to help you identify your greatest potential of living a strong life. It helps you discover the role that you were born to play. What do you gravitate towards? Specific examples are given in the book that women will identify with.

If you do find you are not living your strongest life, make small changes and move towards your new goal. If you want to run a marathon and do not even exercise, start by walking 10 minutes. Then 20 minutes. Keep increasing it. Think of where you want to be in five years. No matter what you decide to do, five years will go by. It’s your choice how you spend it and the quality of your life. Why wait? Start now.

A Man of His Word by Kathleen Fuller

Absorb yourself in this delightful Amish story set in the village of Middlefield, Ohio.

Moriah marries the love of her life, Levi. Perfect. She becomes pregnant and it is exactly the way it should be.

Levi sees the world outside of the Amish Community and it is much more appealing. Even his unborn child isn’t enough to bring him back to his faith. Levi’s twin brother, Gabriel, pleads for him to return but the world has dangled its carrot and he’s not returning.

Gabriel longs to be with Moriah but the Amish ways forbid it. Moriah is bound to Levi forever even if he leaves her. She is forced to raise her child alone. The Amish community surrounds Moriah with their love and support and Gabriel continues to fight his feelings.

How does Moriah move on when her life has crashed down? She is unable to marry again and must lean on her family for support. The baby will be fatherless which crushes her soul. She should have been a better wife. How can God allow this to happen?

Moriah’s story is about leaning and trusting God. God will provide and will turn evil into good in His timing, not ours.

What struck me about this book was the love the Amish Community has for one another. They live a simple life. They make their food from scratch, sew their own clothes, and farm. In some ways, I think they have it right.

Just Between You and Me by Jenny B. Jones

Fabulous!!

I loved this book on so many levels!

The characters and story are in-depth. The character development is outstanding. Jenny digs deep into the fabric of each person. You feel their pain. Laugh and cry with them. This novel is nothing short of amazing.

Maggie has the dream career as a cinematographer. It’s full of adventures and Maggie loves a thrill. She fears nothing. Her life takes a turn when she is requested to make a trip back to her hometown of Ivy, Texas. Her plan is to take care of business then leave.

Maggie is easy to love! She is hilarious (I have a sneaky suspicion that Jenny B. Jones is a riot to be around). She returns to Texas and finds that her sister abandoned her niece, Riley. Riley is a feisty ten-year-old, smart-mouthed, and fights Maggie at every turn. She takes out her aggression on her classmates.

In walks Connor, a former classmate of Maggie’s. The past gets in the way and they simply do not see eye to eye. Maggie’s in a slight dilemma. Connor seems to be the only one who can pierce through Riley’s rough exterior. Can Maggie and Connor get along for the sake of Riley?

Maggie has a once in a lifetime offer. One is from the world. The other is from God. How will she choose?

This book is multi-faceted. It’s about love, trusting God, and facing your fears. It’s about letting go and allowing God to work in your life.

Fearless by Max Lucado

Faith not Fear

There’s the old adage that F-E-A-R is simply false evidence that appears real. We fear of many things that may not ever become a reality.

Max Lucado is a master storyteller. We are afraid of something. I happen to be afraid of spiders. I have seen one too many these past couple of weeks. It’s interesting that I happen to outweigh the creepy, eight-legged creature by a gazillion pounds but I’m still afraid. I can either face it or continue to be afraid. I choose a big candle (still wrapped) to squash it. Smack. Gone. No chance of coming back to life.

As Max illustrates throughout his book, Jesus tells us many times to not be afraid. But, he also tells us that we will not live our life without troubles. Some of us fear death. Unless we are redeemed by the rapture, all of us will die. 100%. No exception. Jesus is faithful though. He states, “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me… I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. (John 14:1, 3 NLT). I can only speak for myself, but I’m choosing to trust his Word. I will not escape death but I can meet Him face to face upon my death.

When we fear, worry invades our thoughts. As Max states in his book, “Fret won’t fill a bird’s belly with food or a flower’s petal with color. Birds and flowers seem to get along just fine, and they don’t take antacids.” Isn’t that great? God cares more about us than the birds and the flowers . He takes care of them. Why do we doubt Jesus? Or believe he might forsake us? Be faithful not fearful.

A comprehensive study guide is included. It is designed for groups or individuals. The purpose is to examine your fear, expose it, and then battle it. This is accomplished through the study of the Word. Max provides scripture verses to help solidify what you have learned.

I highly recommend Fearless by Max Lucado for your library. Do not be afraid but be faithful. The body will one day fade out, and then Jesus will walk in.

Rain Dance by Joy DeKok

Rain Dance is a story of two women. One chooses abortion. The other chooses to end her infertility treatment.

I can relate to the infertility because I went through it. It was painful. I went through many of the thoughts/feelings that Jonica went through in this story. When she cried, I understood. When she was angry at others for choosing abortion, I understood. When she felt that the God was punishing her for some sin, I understood.

I knew that Stacie was going to abort her baby but I was hoping that she would decide against it. Stacie isn’t alone. Many people do choose abortion. They believe the lies. It’s not a baby. Better to end it if it interferes with life. You can always have another one, right?

Inwardly, Stacie and Jonica were at odds with one another but strangers. Jonica does a simple act with a hope that maybe Stacie will not go through with the abortion. Stacie decides she is going to confront Jonica. After all, it’s none of her business. Things do not go as planned for either one of them.

Truthfully, I understood Jonica’s side but had a difficult time with Stacie. How dare Stacie get an abortion when Jonica and others like her so desired to start their family. Before reading this book, I never put much thought into the women who chose abortion. After all, they chose it. Women do not choose to be infertile. This book has caused me to stop and pray for those women who choose abortion. Their pain and agony can be unbearable. It’s only through God’s grace can they learn to not only to forgive themselves but to allow God to work in their lives.

Infertility is painful too. I’ve shed many tears before adopting our son. I do not fret over never being able to be pregnant. I know that God had the perfect plan for me and that was to be my son’s mother.

May others read Joy’s book and understand both Stacie and Jonica. Whether you have decided to abort your baby or have had trials of infertility, lean on God. He understands. Remember, He gave His one and only Son for all of us.

Menu for Romance by Kaye Dacus

Menu for Romance is the second in the series of Brides of Bonneterre by Kaye Dacus. This is a light-hearted romance novel. I believe this book is about choices. Meredith makes a conscience decision on New Year’s that she will no longer be single by the end of the year. She is in love with Chef Major O’Hara but after eight years, Meredith has decided that is a futile quest.

Meredith is remodeling an old house and runs into an extremely handsome contractor. Not only is he qualified to assist her in restoring her house, Ward asks her out. He’s a dream come true. He’s attentive, handsome, and has a magnetic personality.

Chef Major O’Hara is offered a dream of a lifetime by his employer. He has the opportunity to open up his own restaurant. He has a decision to make. Due to a secret that he’s only shared with a few, he has given up on love and now may have to give up his dream. The only way to change that is to share the secret with the one that he truly cares about.

In a small way, it reminded me a little bit of “It’s a Wonderful Life.” When Major O’Hara looks back on his life of unfortunate circumstances, he learns a powerful lesson that we can all relate to. Every one of us has past experiences that we wish we could erase. Each event becomes a template in our lives. They have an impact of who we will become one day. Our past doesn’t determine our future. I am grateful that God works through us to become who He wants us to be. We need to make a conscience and intentional choice to follow Him.

Woodhouse Family Welcome Home! by Kimberley Woodhouse

I cannot count how many times I thought ‘WOW’. Kimberley is transparent throughout the book. You feel like you are sitting next to her in a coffee shop. She’s had so many scares with her kids and she maintains her motto, “Consider it Pure Joy.”

The book is not only beautifully written, it includes several pages of photos of her family. What I love about the Woodhouse Family is their devotion to each other. I love that Kayla and Josh are so caring to one another. I love that the entire family are so in tuned with one another. I love this family!

Kayla is unable to feel pain. She doesn’t realize that she’s bleeding until it’s everywhere. Josh was a sick little boy due to asthma. The fight between trying to figure the best environment for both of them was a continual struggle. One thing that I believe helped tie the family together, is the close friends that they had wherever they ended up. Couple this with Kimberley’s faith; it’s the perfect way to maintain pure joy through the trials endured by this lovely family.

There wasn’t a spot in the book that didn’t leave me grateful for the joy that the Woodhouse Family exudes in their lives. It’s so easy to look at what you do not have versus what you could have. We can all have joy in our lives no matter the circumstances. If you don’t believe me, ask the Woodhouse Family. There were too many times that God showed up to be merely coincidences.

Read the book and expect to be blessed beyond measure.

More than Selling

This book is more than selling to males and females. It discusses the differences between how a male and female brain works. She brings up many interesting stories that I’ve never thought of before. If I were looking at a map, I would turn it so that I was facing the same way. My husband, on the other hand, doesn’t find the need to turn it. It’s because he has a much higher spatial reasoning than I do.

A man is on a mission. If he goes out to pick something up that he needs for a home project, that’s his mission. A woman has her own agenda. She figures that since he is driving right by the store, he can pick up some milk, go to the post office, etc. He’s put out by that because it’s interfering with his mission to go and come right back. He may even be irritated.

Elizabeth Pace expands the process of selling to women versus men. It’s interesting that women actually do 80% of the shopping and therefore, really may be the decision maker in the family. Elizabeth provides specific examples on how to communicate with both sexes. Females care about relationships first and foremost. If you can keep that in mind, you will go far. They can switch to several topics during the conversation and keep up. Try doing that to a male, you will lose the sale. Do not interrupt him to say, “I know how you feel.” It won’t work. Listen and be direct. Do not ever say your product can help them.

If you are serious about wanting to make a difference in your sales, read this book and take it to heart. Highlight, highlight, and highlight.

me, just different by Stephanie Morrill

What a fabulous debut novel!

Skylar appears to have it all together. She’s popular and gorgeous. She has a boyfriend that other girls dream of dating. Like her friends, she will party and have a good time. However, one party changed her outlook on life. She decides she’s not into the party scene and decides to return to church. The more she attempts to get better, the worse things become.

Skylar and her sister are in midst of their parents squabble. A huge secret lies between the girls that threaten their relationship with one another. Is blood thicker than water? Or, did Skylar betray her one and only sister?

Skylar begins a journey of figuring out life, friends, and God.

Best of all, it was a great and satisfying ending.

Although I was a little bit saddened that the book ended, I am thrilled that there will be a forthcoming book. I wonder how Skylar’s life will proceed and her sister’s as well. Kudos to Stephanie Morrill.

I'll Make You an Offer You Can't Refuse by Michael Franzese

Solomon or Machiavelli?

Michael Franzese changed his life from being a capo in the Columbo Crime era to helping others succeed in business legally.

Mr. Franzese shares practical advice on how to succeed in business. Even the mob needs a solid business plan in order for them to succeed. The difference between the mob business and legit business is the consequence of failure. For the legit business, it may be bankruptcy. For the mob business, it’s a matter of life or death in the literal sense. He does not advocate being a part of the mob in any way, shape, or form. His life was ruined. He hurt himself and others by engaging in these activities and then being sent to prison.

Mr. Franzese compares the advice from Solomon and Machiavelli’s philosophy. Think of both of them sitting on each of your shoulders. Solomon says, “Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.” Machiavelli’s advice? You do whatever is necessary including but not limited to lie, cheat, and steal.

The strategy is simple. Either follow Solomon or Machiavelli. It’s your choice. It’s your life. Choose wisely. In both cases as Solomon says, “Carefully consider the path for your feet, and all your ways will be established.”

Thrill Ride

Exposure by Brandilyn Collins is a breath-taking ride. If you do put the book down, it’s not because you want to stop reading. You have to take a break and breathe.

Kaycee is a newspaper columnist who makes fun of her own fears. She writes about fears and it begins to play games in her mind. Or is it?

A little girl is missing. Is Kaycee responsible?

Kaycee has the distinct feeling that she is being watched. She keeps seeing a dead man in various forms. When she reports it to the police, the evidence is gone. Is Kaycee really seeing things or is it all in her mind? She doesn’t want to keep crying wolf especially when the police need to focus on finding the missing girl.

Kaycee meets her fear head on once and for all. After all, it’s in her imagination. Right?

Brandilyn Collins is nothing short of an amazing author. There are no wasted words. Each word counts. You feel like you are experiencing what Kaycee is going through.

I would highly recommend this book and all of Brandilyn’s books to anyone who loves a thrill ride. I wouldn’t recommend letting go. Hold onto the sides because you are in for a ride of your life.

This is a high-quality children’s book for ages 9 and up. It contains the exactly what the title implies ~ wacky and weird animals. Each animal is dedicated to entire page of full color. Hanna explains why each is either wacky or weird. Included are what they eat, where they live and how big they grow. Some parts of the animals are magnified to point out something a little bit weird or different. This is definitely a keeper. It would be a great resource for kids too.

Included with the book is a short DVD. I enjoyed the animal bloopers but most of the DVD appeared to be like a home video instead of professional quality. My son loves America’s Funniest Videos and I was hoping for much more animal bloopers. Putting that aside, I still believe that the DVD was something extra and there were a few parts that were funny.

I would recommend this product for tutors, teachers, and students. It’s a fun book and different from others that I’ve seen. There is even a glossary at the end of the book for students to explain what some of the terms mean such as Tragelaphid, Nocturnal, and Brackish.

Jack has travelled to many places to find these wild, wacky and weird animals and it is nicely illustrated in this hardcover children’s book.

Hope amidst Tragedy

I loved this story! It is set in the late 1800’s in a remote area of Idaho. Robin makes you care about the characters and live vicariously through them.

Dru’s main objective is not only to find a suitable governess for her two children but someone her husband, Gavin would fall in love with. Why? Because Dru is dying and their marriage was one of convenience. Dru’s previous husband passed away in a tragic accident and Gavin took on the role to take care of Dru and her children.

Due to past experiences, Gavin is none too happy about his wife’s decision to hire a governess. After all, he can take care of the two girls on his own. He doesn’t need a high and mighty woman who doesn’t like to get her hands dirty to take over. Gavin doesn’t leave Emily any doubt that she is not wanted at the ranch. Emily and Gavin fight against their attraction toward one another. Emily loves the Lord with all her heart but Gavin keeps his distance with God.

Patrick, a rich landowner falls for Emily. He can give her anything her heart’s desire. He lavishes Emily with compliments and makes her feel worthwhile and special.

Emily does fall in love with the children but the question remains, “Does Dru get her wish fulfilled?”

Three friends aka The Triple Threat cleverly named after their favorite dessert. They each have their own expertise and strength in the crime field and become a target themselves. Allison finds herself threatened with mysterious phone calls. Could it be the same person who took Katie Converse? A young senate page is missing and a Senator is suspect. Katie is a good student but emotionally troubled as indicated by her blog. She refers to Senator X in several of her blogs. She appears to be at odds with her stepmother, although nothing specific is really shown as to why that might be. Can The Triple Threat women solve the case? The book appears to revolve around the three women instead of the missing teen. Maybe this is the intent of the author. I kept turning back a few pages to remember who was that character again? It was a fairly easy book to put down. A girl was missing but I was hard pressed to care about her. I think if the book would have shown some scenes with the Senator to show their relationship, I think it would’ve had a much stronger impact on readers.

Life is full of up and downs. Jesus said that we would have trouble in this world. In this book, a man simply named Jones takes notice. He is present at exactly the right moment for a businessman struggling with his marriage, a young man, a couple, and others. Just as the light bulb goes on, Jones disappears quietly. Where he lives no-one knows but one thing for sure. He will show up again exactly at the moment you need him with his suitcase in hand. He travels light. The suitcase is all he needs to make an impact on others.

This book is chalk full of life lessons. Throughout the book, Jones encounters people from different aspects of life starting with the author, Andy. Buy a yellow high-lighter and be prepared to mark up your book. The lessons are simple yet effective. All we have to do is stop and take notice. This is a great gift to share with your family and friends. Or even pass on to a stranger. Notice a person struggling? Take notice and hand them this book.

Andy Andrew has written a timeless treasure. He is master storyteller and I highly recommend this to others.

I can be honest. It’s been difficult to read through the entire bible and then I stop for whatever reason. What’s great about this MP3 CD’s is that I can listen to them in my car. These CD’s are so powerful. They bring the New Testament to life. Do not let the title fool you. This is great for adults too. These actors are passionate and their love for the Lord is apparent. This collection comes with a DVD and the directors discuss the project and the actors discuss their heart. It’s as if each part was perfect for that specific person. They are eager to spread the word. The music background feels real. The stories become real and are no just longer words on a page. The story comes alive. The sound effects are so effective that I actually thought something was going on outside of my car but no ~ it was CD. When Jesus allows the demons to go into the pigs, the demon voice is not only a voice, it truly does sound like a demon. I hope that Thomas Nelson will produce the Next Generation Old Testament with some of the same fabulous voices. Watching the DVD combined with listening to the CD is the best way to take in all God’s Word Next Generation style. If you want to make a difference in a young adult’s life consider buying this for them. It will change the way they think of the bible. Great Job, Thomas Nelson!

One More Chapter

As I started to read this, I had a certain page count in mind. Instead I kept saying, “One more chapter.” Daniel’s Den is a story of a man and a woman from different backgrounds but in truth want the same thing: be ethical and do the right thing. It is a story about good versus evil. Daniel and Laura have one thing in common. Hit men are looking for them and they will stop at nothing to get what they want including murder. The stakes are increased. Each of them is unable to run ~ there are others to think about. Laura has an impressionable young son who is beyond his years. He’s the man of the house but he’s also the one who needs to be nurtured. Daniel has his black lab. When evil closes in both the young boy (Andy) and Elvis (black lab) prove to be both a help and a hindrance. Before long, Daniel and Laura are all over the news and look guilty as sin. The hit men and the police are in a race to find Daniel and Laura. The police are looking for an arrest. The hit men are looking to kill. Innocent people fall victim to the tangle of webs that are strung throughout the story. If only, they can live one more chapter.

Challenged Me

Rachel’s Tears challenged me. It is one of the most inspiring stories that I’ve read in such a long time.

Rachel was gunned down at Columbine High School 10 years ago. Her legacy lives on. The book gives you a sneak peek into her innermost feelings through her drawings and journal. No doubt. She loved Jesus. She was a Christ Follower and she continued until the end of her life. She was spiritual beyond her years. She had such a connection with God that she knew that her time on earth was short. Rachel’s Tears is a reminder that we need to take each day as a gift. Live each day as if it was the last. It could be. I felt challenged by her story. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with the daily “to do’s” but Rachel reminds me to always put Jesus as number one. She had a dream to impact the world. Through her death, she did. Millions have been impacted by her faith. I pray that if given the same situation, that I would choose Jesus no matter what the consequence may be. Rachel was not perfect but through Jesus Christ she kept her thoughts “in check” by constant communion with God. I pray that others will be challenged and will do the same.

It’s a reminder that sometimes you do not realize how much you miss someone or something until its gone. No matter the consequences, Jed is determined to figure out where Daisy has gone. Why God allows evil in the world is another theme in the book.

Jed’s father, Hap, is the pastor of the town. Being a preacher’s kid has its own challenges. The secrets remain behind closed doors. Arguments ensue. How do you escape? Will Jed ever be able to defend himself? Will he be able to move past the guilt? Will he be able to protect his sister when she insists tagging along on his journey to find out the truth? These are questions that will be answered and more. Mary is not afraid to write about the trials we all face.

Anne Hawthorne, a professional wedding planner is used to catering to everyone else to be sure that they have the perfect wedding. What do you do when you happenstance fall in love with the groom? Anne knows what she has to do. He’s taken. She’ll be wrapped up in planning a wedding and then he springs up in her mind. Shooing the thoughts away, it becomes clear that something is different about George.

George Laurence, a devout Christian man, meets Anne and begins to fall in love with her. He is unable to share his feelings because he has promised his employer (the real groom) that he would. The closer the wedding date comes, the more lies he has to tell, the more he falls in love with Anne.

Anne’s parents are no longer living due to a tragic accident. Her remaining extended family is a delightful set of characters. She loves them even though at times they do things that make her angry. Her sisters are great but they can be annoying at inconvenient times.

Anne’s past attempts to ruin her future. The real question remains. Will there be a happy ending?

Rex - Powerful Story

Rex is a powerful story full of hope for all people who are touched by autism. Rex has an additional challenge of being void of sight.
Cathleen struggles to find a reason why her son is blind and autistic. She is a single parent and seeks out an appropriate education for her son. It is heartbreaking to hear the teasing that Rex endured during his primary school years. Each child born today has a 1 in 150 chance in being diagnosed with autism.

There is hope. With intervention, parents can be assured that their child will become the best that they can be. In Rex’s case, he is a musician. He can hear the notes once and can replay it instantly and modify it to make it his own style.

Rex is a beautiful young man with an inspiring story to tell. He is like any other child. He laughs, sings, and has emotions. As a mother with a son diagnosed with high-functioning autism, I appreciated the frankness of Cathleen. Cathleen is advocate for her son. Rex is an inspiration to many. He is meeting his purpose on earth. God has a plan for him as Cathleen stated in the book ~ Jeremiah 29:11.

If you are touched by autism in any way, shape, or form, I urge you to buy this book and may you look at the world in a whole new way; through the eyes of Rex.

Historical Treasure

The American Patriot’s Almanac is a beautiful testimony to the history of the United States.

In school, history was boring and tedious. Not with this book. It would make a great history book for students and adults alike. It is filled with historical stories and they are linked to the each day of the year. It can be an additional devotional to your library.

An American History Parade of events is included in each story. The story brings history to life. It represents real people, real events, real meaning to Americans today.

I have fond memories of President Ronald Reagan. On June 12, 1987, he insisted that Mikhail Gorbachev tear the Berlin Wall down. By his persistence, it happened less than three years later. This freed millions of people.

Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Before he signed it, his words were, “I never, in my life, felt more certain that I was doing the right than I do in signing this paper.” Slaves were finally free. From this day forward, January 1, the beginning of a New Year, will bring new meaning.

The authors do not stop at historical facts and wonderful true stories. They expand the book to include: Prayers for the American People that were said by Harry S. Truman, The Reverend Peter Marshall, and Abraham Lincoln among others. Songs and poems are shared.

The United States wouldn’t exist as it is today if it weren’t for the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, Bill of Rights, Gettysburg Address, The Pledge of Allegiance, The Emancipation Proclamation, and much more is included in this wonderful beautifully written book.

I am proud to be an American and I thank the authors, William J. Bennett and John T.E. Cribb for writing this book. I will treasure it.

Are You Being Watched?

Do you ever feel like you are being watched?

Lucas a.k.a. Humpty infiltrates himself among ceilings and other public places for the specific purpose of watching them. He imagines stories about each one and collects special momentums or totems. Each totem has a special meaning to him for which he cannot explain. Living out of his backpack, he thinks he’s alone. Lucas, The watcher, becomes watched.

He is caught by another who appear to be like him. He is not alone. There is a Creep Club and he’s invited. No one is safe from the club members. No one can be trusted. Humpty is thrown into a series of events that he cannot escape. He wants it to end but it’s all he’s ever known. He feels the pull to keep doing it and moving from public to private places.

I read the book thinking I knew how the book was going to end. Wrong! There are situations and events that happen that make no real sense except to Humpty.

At your next meal or work day, look around. Could there be someone watching? You will think twice after reading this book.

I've had the wonderful privilege of reading Megan's book. If you want to read about real life problems with a Christian theme, read this book.

Linda Revere is a delightful character. I laughed out loud starting with page one. It kept me up past my bedtime. I kept telling myself, "just one more chapter."

No emotion is left untouched. In one minute, your laughing. Then in another, your angry or crying. It spans an entire generation and how the dynamics of the situations affect each character. My favorite character, Linda, wears many hats. Watching her balance many hats is a lesson we can all learn.

I learned through this book to pray. Pray about everything. Pray for people that haven't even come into your life yet. Pray without ceasing. Pray whether you feel like it or not. Watch the power of prayer enter your life.

It's been a joy to read Megan's book and I look forward in reading more.

Dominic is playing Walk the Dogs which has won awards such as Major Fun for Kids Award, The National Parenting Center Seal of Approval, and GAMES Magazine Family Game award. The object of the game is to take dogs from the front or back of the line and end up with the most points at the end of the game. Coincidence?

Our family went to the beach to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary.

On Saturday night, Dominic and I headed for the pool. I didn't have any swimming gear so I decided to watch. He brought his horses to swim with him. About 5 minutes later, a dad and his son came to swim.

The boy around 3 years of age seemed rather tiny even for his age. He jumped right in the pool head first. His Dad was right there to watch him. Dominic shared his horse with him and they played.

His Dad was quiet and didn't say much. He left his son in the smaller pool holding onto the side while he did a swim lap. That pool being 4 feet was still quite a bit over his son's head. The way he splashed around in the pool earlier, I thought he could swim.

I watched the little boy go under water and push himself up by flapping his hands and legs. I quickly realized that this boy was in the process of drowning! Water was in his mouth and his face was red. He couldn't swim and he was in a state of panic. Without a thought, I walked straight into the pool fully clothed. I lifted him up out of the water and set him on the edge of the pool. He coughed up water and began to cry. At this point, his Dad didn't see a thing. He was swimming his way back from the other end of the pool. It wasn't until he popped his head up that he had the wondering look on his face. I explained that his son was bobbing up and down. It was then that he admitted that his son was learning how to swim but couldn't yet.

The question remains was it a coicidence or not that I was at that pool at that specific time? There was no-one else around. I can tell you that the previous week, Satan was whispering in my ear that maybe I didn't have a purpose on this earth.

That day, God showed me that I do have a purpose in this life and so does that little boy. Some may say it was a mere coincidence. For me, it was God.

Lukewarm

Our Pastor referred to Revelations 3:15-20 (NIV) in church today. This verse strikes a chord. In the verse, there's the following passage:

I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm-neither hot nor cold-I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

Ouch! I know how easy it is to set aside God. No time. No time to read the bible, attend church, or even minister to others. I believe as a Christian, I am called to live as Christ would live. I have learned to listen to His small still voice. When He says to make amends or apologize, I like to pretend that I really didn't hear it. He has a way of nagging me until I do. But listen! If you ignore Him too long, the voice may disappear. The most amazing fact is He loves us so much that he's waiting for us to come back to Him. But let's not wait too long.

When Dominic woke up this morning, he went straight to my computer to listen to East to West by Casting Crowns. He absolutely loves that song. We found a video on http://www.youtube.com/ that I would like to share. We watched it at least three times.

Voice of Truth

I love the song the 'Voice of Truth' from Casting Crowns. If you haven't already, I hope that you take the time to listen to the words. Whenever I'm doubtful, I remember those words.

Since I love to write, I thought I would post a little bit of reflection of how I see myself and how God sees me.

Experiencing life through Christ is the best thing that's ever happened to me. It's too bad it took be several years to figure this out! With that being said, I like to think of it this way. I imagine a large staircase. At the top of the staircase is Christ. His arms are outstretched. I'm weak at the awesome sight of His presence. I'm filthy. My heart is full of sin. Although I do not deserve Him, I cannot help be drawn to Him. His glorious beauty draws me to Him like a magnet. I notice that as I take each step, I feel different. My ragged clothes begin to fade to white. I keep walking.

A mirror flashed before my eyes. I see the reflection of a beautiful woman, but I don't recognize her. She seems to radiate with love. Then I hear a whisper, "Come to Me." I look up into Jesus' face. He holds me. It's the day I've been waiting for my entire life. It's here. I cannot contain the joy that I feel. He says, "look to my right." As I turn, I'm speechless. It's the mirror. I realize that I'm the beautiful woman.

I see now that each time I have taken a problem to Him on earth, he has been slowly making me pure. I am transformed as I look into His eyes at this moment....a moment to be treasured in eternity with Him. My first pure true love has never given up on me. I'm finally home.

I'm so glad that that living on earth is not the end.
